been on hiatus =)
I've been pretty engrossed in a crocheting project the last week or so. With my freelancer status, I've had a whole lotta time to watch documentaries...thank you netflix. Having decided to be as green as I can be with my little to no knowledge of how to grow my own food or make my own clothes....etc...I've been trying to do my research and teach myself.
My first attempt came in the form of an herb garden on my balcony. For about a month my little garden was thriving, but alas it has succumb to my black thumb. Bummer. I'm going to try again, but this time i've enlisted the help of a friend from back east who knows her stuff. More on that some other time.
My second attempt at being a bit more eco-friendly comes in the form of reducing my dependency on plastic. I've been refilling gallon size plastic jugs with water from the local $0.25/gallon water dispensers, but that's not enough. I'm still using plastic and the side effects are all those gross chemicals in my water that are being leached by the bottle. I've decided to invest in a water filtration unit that attaches to my faucet. Being that i'm a renter and poor...at this point, I don't really have access to a well hook up leading to my house....but maybe someday (again....an idea from my green thumbed friend back east whose home is VERY green)
Back to that whole, plastic is bad thing. Groceries. Everyone knows you should bring you're own bags to the market. I remember those cute netted bags that would seem so unassuming but would stretch to ridiculous capacities and were so popular back in the day. I figured with my free time, I could make some of those. So I did. I looked up some ideas online and crocheted my own shopping tote. Thus far, i've used acrylic yarn because that's all I had access to at my local Michaels, but I'll be making these out of organic cotton and hemp in the near future. I just need to find places to buy my materials =) Anyway...the bag was a success and made shopping a lot more fun and easy. The bag stretches to accommodate ALL my groceries. I'm sure I could smuggle a 4 year old in it, and I probably looked a wee bit crazy toting around what would've fit in 4 or 5 bags in my crocheted joint...but it worked for me!

Anyway! I'm proud of my lil project and the outcome. I'm already on bag #2 and hope to *maybe* sell these in my etsy shop =)
In light of my recent documentary watching frenzy, i'll make some recommendations on docs to watch in another post. Most of these movies a) motivated me to be a better person and b) depressed the living hell out of me. What kind of person would I be if I didn't pass the fun along? lol Definitely eye openers.
Cheers!
